The Library Public Services Specialist I will work at the Circulation desk providing friendly and effective services to library patrons, including students, staff and faculty. The work schedule will be between 15 and 29 hours per week and will primarily be in the afternoon and evenings. Other scheduling options may become available.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Perform circulation desk functions, including but not limited to checking materials in/out, helping patrons located library materials, registering new borrowers, and providing information concerning the library to patrons in person and over the phone. Learn and use the library circulation software. Greet visitors when they enter the building. Be responsible for the timely opening and closing of the library as assigned. Assist with shelving, organization of books, and collection maintenance. Provide basic reference services as needed. Complete other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Preferred Qualifications
Associates Degree or some college.
Bilingual or multilingual ability.
Previous experience working in a library setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge: Familiarity with Microsoft 365 applications and other standard computer software/equipment. General library practices. Skills: Customer service. Interpersonal communication (both with patrons and coworkers). Perform well in the occasional high-stress situation. Active Listening Skills Cash Handling Skills Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities. Interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and community members. Provide effective customer service to a diverse population. Solve problems efficiently and effectively in accordance with SLCC Library and Salt Lake Community College policies. Express ideas and follow directions both verbally and in writing. Manage time effectively. Work independently with minimal supervision. Multi-task while on desk duty Stand, bend, and lift up to 10lbs, as well as push loaded book carts. Learn and utilize library classification systems such as Library of Congress.
Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Cleaning work areas of dust and debris. Assisting with staff training and other professional development opportunities. Participation in internal SLCC library working groups.
